He has caused me, yet again, to succumb to wanton desires for a minis game I originally had absolutely no intention of getting into! Yes, after just one afternoon playing Dust Warfare with Paul he managed to sneak into the conversations between turns and convince me that the new FFG game Star Wars X-Wing was a "must have"... okay well maybe not so hard to convince as the previews online have been great.<br />
<br />
Anyways, after placing an order with <a href="http://www.defiantgaming.com/shop/" target="_blank">Defiant Gaming</a> on Monday, the parcel turned up today! Kudos to Defiant Gaming for great service.<br />
<br />
So here we go with the ceremonial unboxing tonight; forgive the pic quality as it was done on an mobile phone :-(<br />
<br />
The package being ripped asunder....<br />

Here are the three fighters from the Core set on their stands. THe X-Wing is a little fragile feeling but they are beautifully modelled.<br />

So, over all I think excellent value for a boxed game costing $36AUD! Saturday will be the first game try out at Tom's!<br />

Mind you, thsi will be generic enough to be able to play WW2,Modern skirmsih, Sci-Fi such as Infinity or Halo-esque...or Bug Hunts..... pretty much anything in an underground or warehouse complex setting will do!<br /><br />I've decided on a 12" square modular system, ultimately enabling a 6' x 4' table arrangement with up to 4 separate entrance sections.<br /><br />Here are the first two trial pieces.<br /><br />This one has three entry points, a 2" wide and in a T shape, 2 4" wide door ways.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhINKnMVdYens8ikLgxcwn18NYvnkabxmqRWawFPuBwcsnQBip8ggYn2yBPxjzVzSVuDg3kkJY8WCqa06D0Q2vS-3Ue_wVfVMDi-YNGsELxcsJYlhUyzntZRd-QAY65Hac5kcV5vycBNzdi/s1600/Bunker001.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; Thunderwolves.. well, whoever heard of anyone EVER riding a wolf? Actually, this is a game so it doesn't really matter!! In any case I went back out and got the Canis Wolfborn mini which really is a beast of a miniature... for teh hermits out there, he is on the left on the pic below.<br /><br />So, in typical Games Workshop form, they haven't released a mini for the most dramatic of all the Space Wolves army list... so the web forums are full of suggestions of all sorts. For my part I came across the Dungeons and Dragons singles minis of the Dire Wolf and after a very little effort of rearranging a set of Space Marine biker legs the result is what you see below. Personally I'm quite happy with it. Good size match and the soft plastic is ok to work with; just using SuperGlue instead of Revells. See how it comes up painted.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1yMyTDPZNdb7MCqHICgF_uHFp7lsHHnIC3yYgqXcdnW6ZbzIACOzrHWepIEiAwXfOYB3bBWVGa4g5XOPXSKuGfzW8eVlGxGPx7psqxaWhEujkEkf43QJd2KjVqHs3ckFC0cJVet8rEckp/s1600/Thunderwolf_001.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1yMyTDPZNdb7MCqHICgF_uHFp7lsHHnIC3yYgqXcdnW6ZbzIACOzrHWepIEiAwXfOYB3bBWVGa4g5XOPXSKuGfzW8eVlGxGPx7psqxaWhEujkEkf43QJd2KjVqHs3ckFC0cJVet8rEckp/s320/Thunderwolf_001.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5406075796613477378" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJdGc55o_zlgrpkh-fQ0UpTLYRaNwCY3_qgb-6OkjKDviNjEkY8Z9YF6LkwPKLdaao0LVL-AdD79EI6jElBixnYyJfFY2qAV7JaHYz_Q_5FrtWxqOQJsH4SB-i44kNe_Hbh6zjn3AZAL3Q/s1600/Thunderwolf_002.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 314px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJdGc55o_zlgrpkh-fQ0UpTLYRaNwCY3_qgb-6OkjKDviNjEkY8Z9YF6LkwPKLdaao0LVL-AdD79EI6jElBixnYyJfFY2qAV7JaHYz_Q_5FrtWxqOQJsH4SB-i44kNe_Hbh6zjn3AZAL3Q/s320/Thunderwolf_002.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5406075794302840178" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXPxxeRDi3Af7DeXtJDGFB9dkiocVX6duW907WBsFmF7l8myn-pm7Y8uP5daLXKwLK8Nl6H7Z_0cT0iFFNCtxE3vpGt1vJYc_AtkYJf3sKCcQ5shZoXHr-FNmtxCVOZMtOj-3p0cA3WXfJ/s1600/Thunderwolf_003.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXPxxeRDi3Af7DeXtJDGFB9dkiocVX6duW907WBsFmF7l8myn-pm7Y8uP5daLXKwLK8Nl6H7Z_0cT0iFFNCtxE3vpGt1vJYc_AtkYJf3sKCcQ5shZoXHr-FNmtxCVOZMtOj-3p0cA3WXfJ/s320/Thunderwolf_003.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5406075788901027314" border="0" /></a>Owenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15353100733118297481noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8206589365163291424.post-82827855812723716492009-10-29T00:46:00.001-07:002009-10-29T00:49:11.827-07:00That's more like it!OK, with the second squad from the SH 3rd box I tried the much lighter colour and in fact went with Vallejo Pale Sand. The Devlan Mud wash came up a treat! Pretty simple really; printed out the "skins" of buildings courtesy of the Ambush Alley Yahoo Group files, created basic shells from 6mm foam core and glued the paper walls on. Complete with doors, windows and posters!!<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;">This is an aerial view of the 11 buildings so far.<br /></div><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTrYfuqYPR7eY2gm36_RX_SOnf9-v-wtOIhK_sm7n4ea0kjgKYS866EIh2wNy_QOGwtP5b086rgjG3DDqJ_xPdj00Igawpz_9Eg1xyeytN_MXAZA2i770UWH7xSiLuWwErebkX0X1-5PkA/s1600-h/AAVillage011.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 296px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTrYfuqYPR7eY2gm36_RX_SOnf9-v-wtOIhK_sm7n4ea0kjgKYS866EIh2wNy_QOGwtP5b086rgjG3DDqJ_xPdj00Igawpz_9Eg1xyeytN_MXAZA2i770UWH7xSiLuWwErebkX0X1-5PkA/s320/AAVillage011.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5291466110155634914" border="0" /></a><br /><div style="text-align: center;">A "ground level" view of USMC dismounted.<br /></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXbGrAk6SC8I7aCo-LCiTsGcrem900Jw6qfWKZMYBATIcWi4v8lq0Wzk1Rfz15X3b9quX1Seuwyp_edH4WaoGZrS_pjyJSMgCWh7j1XseZns-5Sl2ljE_lgc_UikTlN3vIGgWqvaaV1Jdf/s1600-h/AAVillage009.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 174px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXbGrAk6SC8I7aCo-LCiTsGcrem900Jw6qfWKZMYBATIcWi4v8lq0Wzk1Rfz15X3b9quX1Seuwyp_edH4WaoGZrS_pjyJSMgCWh7j1XseZns-5Sl2ljE_lgc_UikTlN3vIGgWqvaaV1Jdf/s320/AAVillage009.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5291466112304270082" border="0" /></a><br /><div style="text-align: center;">The other vehicle in the patrol.<br /></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6FVklHO1MSKAu2wGS8uEUjLLBMRRd6ww8JIupJScIETB3gdPGL9fmIE5UfofPqG7k_JLMPKdvQ-560ZtUJMPD8qjAXnp4lxbEy_gfAulzrRu_xAfW88u4s7Lj3R6ZI-d2dnQsvXLz4Jn3/s1600-h/AAVillage007.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 162px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6FVklHO1MSKAu2wGS8uEUjLLBMRRd6ww8JIupJScIETB3gdPGL9fmIE5UfofPqG7k_JLMPKdvQ-560ZtUJMPD8qjAXnp4lxbEy_gfAulzrRu_xAfW88u4s7Lj3R6ZI-d2dnQsvXLz4Jn3/s320/AAVillage007.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5291466105573579826" border="0" /></a><br /><div style="text-align: center;">And an oblique aerial view, notice the rear building; these cut outs can be stacked to make multi storey dwellings.<br /></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmFUbjmtCs3QGzv8DUDv0WuuyDlGtPUIoJdcwpugU8mDuAXTG_RDuirE-qIMWorwcsqLLpaWrr0t4jilZt0u9tDqb25dJMpt7nQTInTj2gUojDWNjg7H6msmjS5M_f9UhfO6BtLlNj6XLC/s1600-h/AAVillage002.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 275px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmFUbjmtCs3QGzv8DUDv0WuuyDlGtPUIoJdcwpugU8mDuAXTG_RDuirE-qIMWorwcsqLLpaWrr0t4jilZt0u9tDqb25dJMpt7nQTInTj2gUojDWNjg7H6msmjS5M_f9UhfO6BtLlNj6XLC/s320/AAVillage002.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5291466105868468898" border="0" /></a><br /><div style="text-align: center;">...... and only about 40 more to go I reckon!<br /></div>Owenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15353100733118297481noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8206589365163291424.post-22534333744713477682009-01-02T23:40:00.000-08:002009-01-02T23:55:49.166-08:002008 going...going... gone!<span style="font-size:100%;">Oh dear, been a bit of a break between posts. Rules will be Disposable Heroes and played in 28mm on three tables joined together to give a 6' x 12' space!<br /><br />It is set in the first 48 hours of D-Day after the allies have broken through the Germans coastal defences and into the farmland immediately beyond the beach landing zones. Scratch fighting groups of Germans have been hastily banded together to contain the allies and this game represents one of the myriad small engagements that took place.<br /><br />Setting the scene. A mixed force of allies; a platoon each of Brits and Americans with some armour support have managed to break through and hole up in two small villages overnight. It is now morning and the allies have received orders to consolidate their positions and to form a defensive line on the three villages in this area. A mixed force of German armour and infantry of approx Compay strenght has been reported to be in close proximity and expected to arrive any minute! If the allies can hold out until 16:00 an armoured brigade will be able to relieve them the south provided that they can control at least two of the key villages. The allies can't afford to be bogged down in this area as it is a key advance route to the NE.<br /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;">Chaussure Humide<br /></div><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjW60WSrBTVrHwMswao1oAcAqGUkmvICWjiR9lj2onFY-V5BW7r0BEVJ2q2ENWvBvDlSptryrxGGyM9dPTC8QmdluOgBL7bxKPnvbKMAZmtIJmcuUiW__iXqp_elmjq1WjTX1v3KInE4AN/s1600-h/game_map_20080927.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjW60WSrBTVrHwMswao1oAcAqGUkmvICWjiR9lj2onFY-V5BW7r0BEVJ2q2ENWvBvDlSptryrxGGyM9dPTC8QmdluOgBL7bxKPnvbKMAZmtIJmcuUiW__iXqp_elmjq1WjTX1v3KInE4AN/s320/game_map_20080927.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5249893511261529714" border="0" /></a><span style="font-weight: bold;">Forces</span><br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Allies</span><br /><br />A "free" Company HQ group comprising the basic platoon HQ force with no upgrades except that a radio operator may be added; allows the HQ to act as a Forward Observer.<br /><br />Infantry comprising 2 or 3 platoons including any Platoon Support options, maximum of 1400 points. Troops may be retained off board but all intended entry points must be recorded before the Allies deploy any troops.<br /><br />Allies can deploy their forces distributed in any two out of the three villages. All troops must be deployed within the village boundary (a 2' square).<br /><br />On turn one Germans take first activation.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Victory Conditions</span><br /><br />The winner is the side that controls at least two of the three villages. The allied armoured forces will arrive at 16:00 hours real time; this is not a tunr limited game. To control a village the force must occupy at least 2/3 of buildings with Unbroken troops with no enemy troops in the same building.<br /><br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Terrain Notes:</span><br /><br />The villages each contain 3 or 5 houses. These are clay brick construction and count as AC3 cover. The village boundary will be a mixture of hedges, wooden fences and low stone wall, counting as AC2 cover.<br /><br />The scattered woods are light woods counting as AC1 cover and reduce vehicle movement to SLOW speed only but do not result in BOG checks.<br /><br />Between the villages are fields with numerous boundary fences of mixed construction of hedges and timber AC1 cover and some fieldstone walls AC4.Owenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15353100733118297481noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8206589365163291424.post-48004377127252543532008-08-16T20:25:00.000-07:002008-08-16T20:39:07.084-07:00Infinity - compare a few minisOK, the latest set of Sci-Fi skirmish rules I've been taken with is "Infinity". Check out the web site for more details; the rules themselves are actually free to download although the hardcover retail set has a HEAP of fantastic mini eye candy. If you do like the rules you will probably end up buying the retail copy.<br />These rules are almost a set of RPG rules rather than miniatures skirmish rules, but the mechanics are really VERY good, allowing both players to competely interact irrespective of who's turn it is!<br /><br />Anyway, enough of the rules, what I wanted to do here was show a comparison of mins from a few manufacturers including the excellent sculpts from Infinity. I've included GZG, a GW Catachan IG and some TAG SWAT with M4s and a Eureka Modern German with G36; LURV the G36!<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiz3DMtG9ZV3dMD3qTKCPbDrxIcayYGWhyphenhyphenl03nhibt95Giy6JDSnpblvSUayEPlFYq-r_j8rM-BPZd5NJzYwoFtFgPJKHH9PcxWGBNUOWw7NYiT58dp4JEyFIOUGRzM7r4dhvVydTIx2TXP/s1600-h/28mmComparedGZGInfinity+002a.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiz3DMtG9ZV3dMD3qTKCPbDrxIcayYGWhyphenhyphenl03nhibt95Giy6JDSnpblvSUayEPlFYq-r_j8rM-BPZd5NJzYwoFtFgPJKHH9PcxWGBNUOWw7NYiT58dp4JEyFIOUGRzM7r4dhvVydTIx2TXP/s320/28mmComparedGZGInfinity+002a.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5235324380945758402" border="0" /></a>As you can see, apart from the Yu-Jing Keisotsu mini in the first pic, the GZG minis are waaaay too small.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgS0bLbCD0wwFSnHfMsi0nbdVqpiMBPzIGXTBMPAN_T1mnMaG4qC91ZG0jjJTEyRr6TfU99ZDx3rxTpKdcVJjqzvOQS3fHWUCctoiLxD7CSVR1SRZlH5_y5t3b0l-kEBBFFXql2IqahziNd/s1600-h/28mmComparedGZGInfinity+004a.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgS0bLbCD0wwFSnHfMsi0nbdVqpiMBPzIGXTBMPAN_T1mnMaG4qC91ZG0jjJTEyRr6TfU99ZDx3rxTpKdcVJjqzvOQS3fHWUCctoiLxD7CSVR1SRZlH5_y5t3b0l-kEBBFFXql2IqahziNd/s320/28mmComparedGZGInfinity+004a.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5235324387033369106" border="0" /></a>The TAG minis mix well but are waaay taller then the GZGs...<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoROPyYP2U_ht3ZtYfPQWxJKE4LfZ0mq4IRBLOY9NICvDRF8UZx5lmI45e5Ctfzh9uGsD09t2ZjsyODghvzQBkYpp8-PDo9ygarCB8S94GTibC8HrUfZ6YRUxNtyPkszSL2d0IvQr69xEu/s1600-h/28mmComparedGZGInfinity+006a.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoROPyYP2U_ht3ZtYfPQWxJKE4LfZ0mq4IRBLOY9NICvDRF8UZx5lmI45e5Ctfzh9uGsD09t2ZjsyODghvzQBkYpp8-PDo9ygarCB8S94GTibC8HrUfZ6YRUxNtyPkszSL2d0IvQr69xEu/s320/28mmComparedGZGInfinity+006a.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5235324384259430194" border="0" /></a><br />The Eureka and GW minis in the last pic look a reasonable match to the undercoated Infinity Ariadna.<br /><br />GZG do have a good variety of minis including the New Israeli light power armoured and UNSC Heavy Power armoured minis as well as the "Power Armour" figures that will allow you to field pretty much any proxied figure apart from the Infinity TAGs; the old Heavy Gears are excellent for that!<br /><br />Check Infinity out at www.nomadarachne.comOwenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15353100733118297481noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8206589365163291424.post-70910625563384483002008-05-10T02:55:00.000-07:002008-05-10T03:08:31.919-07:00Whilst on the subject of games today; here's pics from the FoW game played by Tom, Darren, Chris and Greg. Battletech; probably the most consistent group of gaming companions I've come across. The same 10 or so players have been going for at least 10 years!. Warmachine have been keeping a strong showing with at least 3 tables each meeting. A little different today; we had a Warhammer Napoleonics, Disposable Heroes early War, WW2 naval fleet battles and the first games of Infinity I've seen at the club. Infinity minis are NIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICE!! Also saw a Wings of War strating up! Sweet. Anyways, here's some pics for those interested.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitt_ml4WCRlBqd_BMQQY6ebnGJhZHU9BZO1ensrFt_-1PVSTseKPngK_4B0FpbgGNmUW9XmofCtSPEImqeLHckL8ZkGq8rddsGeMItkbsJSdgOXjkF2BK-4PYegofdw0UwujAp_Uwb301R/s1600-h/DSCN0026a.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px;
